Buda Castle Accessibility

Step-free across the two main museums and St Stephen's Hall, five lifts up Castle Hill from the riverside, free wheelchair loan, accessible toilets and audio descriptions. The outdoor cobblestone courtyards are harder — here's how to work around them and make the most of every service.

The interior of Buda Castle — both museums and St Stephen's Hall — is fully step-free, with lifts to every level and accessible toilets. The outdoor cobblestone courtyards and the steep streets of the Castle District are harder. Several lifts (Iskola Street, Murad, Castle Garden Bazaar, Granit and the Széchényi National Library lift) bring wheelchair users up from the riverside without using the funicular or the stairs. See our free & reduced tickets page for the companion-free policy and visitors guide for general practical info.

Facilities and services in detail

Mobility

All museum floors are accessible by lift. Doorways are wide and the route inside the Hungarian National Gallery, the Budapest History Museum and St Stephen's Hall is step-free. Free wheelchair loan is available at the cloakroom of each museum on a first-come basis — we strongly recommend reserving in advance to guarantee one. Accessible toilets are on every level.

To reach the hill itself, use one of the five Castle Hill lifts from the riverside: the Iskola Street Lift, the Murad Lift, the Castle Garden Bazaar Lifts, the Granit Lift and the Széchényi National Library Lift. All five are free and step-free. The funicular cars also accommodate one wheelchair per trip — let staff know.

Sight

The audio guides at both museums include detailed audio descriptions of major works. The Hungarian National Gallery runs occasional touch tours for blind and partially sighted visitors, with tactile reproductions of selected sculptures. Book through the museum's accessibility department.

Hearing

Induction loops are installed at all information points. Sign-language tours in Hungarian Sign Language (HSL) are available on request — at least two weeks notice for arrangement.

Cognitive

The museums are usually quiet outside of school-holiday peaks. Ask at the information desk for the calmest route on the day; staff can point you towards the less-trafficked rooms.

Accessibility FAQ

Common questions about access at Buda Castle

Is the palace fully wheelchair accessible?
The two museums and St Stephen's Hall are fully step-free, with lifts and accessible toilets. The outdoor cobblestone courtyards are harder to navigate but the five hillside lifts give level access from the riverside.
Can I reserve a wheelchair?
Yes — request one in advance via the official site of each museum. Loan is free, but supply is limited to 3–5 chairs per museum so book ahead in summer.
Are companions admitted free?
Yes — one companion of a disabled visitor is admitted free of charge at both museums and on the St Stephen's Hall tour. The disabled visitor also enters free of charge with a valid disability card.
How do I avoid the cobblestones?
Use one of the five hillside lifts to reach the top, then stay on the smoother paved paths around the palace itself. Bus 16 stops directly on Dísz tér, also paved. The cobblestones are unavoidable only if you want to walk the lanes of the Castle District north of the palace.
Are guide dogs allowed?
Yes. Assistance dogs are welcome throughout the museums and the cafés inside the palace.
Is parking available for blue-badge holders?
Yes — designated disabled parking spots are available on Dísz tér and near the Castle Garden Bazaar at the foot of the hill. The hill itself has limited parking; reserve ahead in summer via the palace administration.
Are there quiet times to visit?
Yes — weekday mornings in winter (10:00–12:00, Nov–Mar) are the quietest in the museums. Staff at the information desk can also point you to less-trafficked rooms on the day.
How do I book a touch tour?
Touch tours run occasionally at the Hungarian National Gallery for blind and partially sighted visitors. Book directly through the museum's accessibility department on mng.hu, ideally a month ahead.
